Состав: Desolate - гитара, бас, вокал, клавишные (Funeral Mourning, Nazxul, Pestilential Shadows, Woods of Desolation) Dolor - гитара, бас (Woods of Desolation) Sorrow - ударные, вокал, клавишные (Baal Gadrial, Battalion, Black Reign, Dungeon, Ilium, Kinstrife & Blood, Lord, Nazxul, Pestilential Shadows, Paindivision, Rift, Simon Polhill) Дискография: ![]() 2007 - Withering Illusions and Desolation (vbr v2 kbps) reviewAfter both of the recent contributions of Austere, which were always done in cooperation with other projects, could completely convince me, now at least for my humble self it’s high time to focus on the actual roots, i.e. the fountain of yon refreshing and even so wistful melodies.
Since the actual publishing in November last year by dint of Goatowarex, a little while has past, and how it seems, “Withering Illusions And Desolation” was able to gain a lot of positive reactions. That these still are still around, the re-release of this album points out clearly. But is this effort really necessary? Well, at least it’s everything else than senseless, for the debut of the Australian duo definitely offers more convenience than the depressive pabulum, and moreover affirms those who have known Austere only by the mentioned split-contributions that already in their early phases they featured qualities which doubtlessly are able to keep up with the material, which should be following. Seldom, one hears a young band, even if it consists of experienced musicians, holding such a stringent line as it’s obviously the case here. So, from the very beginning Austere virtuously knew how to slip into this by hopelessness and desperate intensity ran-through pattern in order to evolve an acutely authentically performed emotionality therein, which partially couldn’t be more haunting – “Withering Illusions And Desolation” is the musical proof of this. As was to be expected, this expression is executed in the typical sound of the Australians, which always comes up full and differentiated, without being devoted to audible Hi-Fi-perfection though. Thereby it doesn’t require monotony – except for the slightly stretched, rhythmless instrumental “Coma” that adorns the final -, whose artful dosage mostly is one of the main problems for the gross in this sector, but in fact an in spite of Mid-Tempo upright kept dynamic, which dissects the pieces by dint of precise drumming and in doing so creates an alternating structure, which is subtly adjusted to the guitaristic variation, so that a downright flow of megrim arises, which softly carries one on the silent waves of bitterness. Conclusion: Filled with desperation and sorrowful verve, “Withering Illusions And Desolation” convinces of the dubiety of the own social existence. (8/10) translated by Frostkrieg [свернуть] ![]() 2008 - Only the Wind Remembers / Ending the Circle of Life Split (320 kbps) reviewMeanwhile, these collaboration-releases relish also my personal acceptance. Certainly, there’s still a lot of crap being published, and a noticeable part of that is embodied by this split-stories. To tell you the truth, I really thought that the Australian Austere again are nothing else than a trivial try to record life’s depression and the sorrows of the soul; nowadays one simply is biased towards this section, even if with Lyrinx a quite promising partner accrues.
But in absolute contrast to my expectations Austere belong to yon few projects, which are worth-listening and –attending, which one should really esteem in this mass of pseudo-scribers. A simple, reverb-rich guitar resounds and abruptly fills the room with a vacuum-like emptiness, which without any further latency drags one down. Into this silence the rhythm sounds, and soon it breaks out, the huge act of absolute desperation. Floating and with much reverb covered guitars glide along with acutely sad faces, sometimes are embraced by high and sharp, even tortured screams, which drown in purest hopelessness. Thereby, Austere proves to be a master of the seldom art of finding the absolute acme, which here really experiences some excellent makes. Because, by dint of yon a great part of astonishing musical efficiency, effectiveness, which pervades deep and hurting, and individuality can be kept constant. A long and blood-red fibre takes course through both grievous pieces, which oppositional to others feature a rather decimated insistence on monotony. Curiously, by-and-by a warming aura bulges in the overall-sound, which initially almost acts inviting, but then reveals its deep abyss and drags the defenceless listener along – and clutches him heavily. And thus: A formidable strike of musically documented weariness of life, which leaves no single gleam of hope. (8.5 points) Differing to these clanging columns of megrim Lyrinx otherwise queues up with a much more dry sound, which at first sight, at second and also at third sight seems to be fixated on absolute uneventfulness, but from the beginning on accommodates a distinctive addiction to demanding drum-work. Nevertheless, it only gets forward very clumsy and slowly; not in the sense of tempo, but in the sense of musical evolvement. So-viewed, Lyrinx with these two songs creates a particular outstanding fundament, but this lacks of detail-richness, what might be the reason for the fact that up to a certain point everything is suchlike longsome and lethargic. But who is able to surmount the huge hurdle of over-spanned endurance will discover absolutely new paths. Namely, the monotonous appendage advances to a musical embodiment of full emptiness and blank meaninglessness, which behind deep-grey veils lets melt the world up to nothingness. In addition, aversion-drenched, hate-filled, painful vocals, which with frequency cut into the viscous course of events and before only limited where associated with intensity. The suiting mellow and steadily furnished with much free-space bass-play thereby complements the tragic act of self-devaluation with a melancholic character. But why this evolvement was that long time coming? (7.5 points) Conclusion: After many moments of stoicism and impatience yon before fully underrated split proves to be an acutely intensive fiasco, which won’t have it soft to find one’s peers. (8/10) translated by Frostkrieg [свернуть] ![]() 2008 - Bleak Split (320 kbps) reviewThat also these two paths cross each other, one would have expected less. Somehow, one could think so, these projects don’t fit together, just take a detailed look at the musical degree. Austere from Australia fully convinced the listener with their debut-album and continued with that level without exception; Isolation on the other hand always worried one since their first two demos, because one incessantly cogitated if this music really holds true potential or not. This cleavage always existed – until now.
But before projecting all attention on the North German trio, also Austere shouldn’t be spared the laud-flood. Namely, yon again present so loosen from the gross of the depressive bigots that it’s, equal to the split with Lyrinx, really comfortable to meet this individual form in musical sense. Another time one in throttled, but with detail-rich inserts featured tempo drags the listener through lonely nature, which comes up with a cold aura, which let’s the anyway painful thoughts appear even more intensive. And also here Austere resort to the still fresh and unused sounding guitar-courses, which in skilful tone-variation paint hopeless pictures in colourless grey onto the canvas of the mind’s eye, and accompany yon act with (sometimes even clear) chants full of desperate expression. Though, this isn’t achieved that hauntingly like on the first split. Nevertheless, this contribution is a true delight. (8 points) Now about Isolation. Those, who always had difficulties with finding the own direction. Meanwhile, though, one seems to be quite sure that the after long mêlée chosen path is the right one. Moreover, for the time being yon is an acutely calm one, which is expressed by dint of almost omnipresent acoustics, which to the anyway by partial slowness coined pieces give an especially contemplative and, I want to accentuate this, dreamy character. Isolation’s music now is filled with such silent and almost romantic images like this of a cloudy day in November at the forlorn shores of the cold sea, whose sparse dune-growth is embraced by a mellow, but cold breeze. Of course, thereby one doesn’t fully abstain from the distorted guitar-aspect, speak not only acoustic means and whose slow escorts take part in the effect, the more so as the described mellowness only dominates the first two compositions, for in then end being completely replaced by rawness. Nonetheless, and that’s absolutely worth-mentioning, yon actually harsher parts insert into the gentle components so wonderfully seamlessly that they even don’t form this loud-quiet-contrast, which otherwise comes about almost imperatively. In fact the with subtleness recorded musical image thereby passes through a climax and an addition of the own shape and thus is able to affect the listener intensively. Suiting to that one abdicated the classic nagging for replacing yon by a truly interesting, even if slightly cumbrous monotony-chant, by virtue of which now one has really to accept the individual power of this material. (8 points) Conclusion: A throughout worthwhile association-work, which goes without mean coquetting and brings the subject to the point. (8/10) translated by Frostkrieg [свернуть] ![]() 2009 - To Lay Like Old Ashes (vbr v2 kbps) reviewFacing the own frequency of releasing, Austere should definitely take care of evoking a more innovative spirit on their second album, since the Australian duo really needs for some additional ingredients for their creations. Indeed, everything which has been done so far glares with a more than satisfying, over-average quality, but by and by one clearly ran the risk of falling for the facelessness of repetition.
So, two years after the surprising debut “To Lay Like Old Ashes” has to endure meaningfully high demands, even though it depends on the listenership. Namely, the stereotype and profanely assessed megrim-disciple will never mind to what an extent yon album reveals an appropriate development; only those, who constantly search for really essential material inside the bursting suicide- and depression-sector, get overwhelmed by silent scepticism every single time. Though, cogency or clarity won’t help here. “To Lay Like Old Ashes” grasps a bit of everything, including the yearned aspect of stylistic advancement. For instance, it is the sound of the compositions which unveils the first freshened element. Austere have loosened from the trancelike, only marginally differentiated production, now foster an acutely pressureful appearance of the rhythmic basis and generally act more powerful and voluminous. Moreover, the potential of expression of the music grows stronger through the discrete use of synthetic lineaments as well as astonishingly versed clear chant, whose presence depicts a completion no only in emotional sense, but regarding the point of profundity affords a grave extension, which in pieces like “This Dreadful Emptiness” steps forward absolutely affectingly. However, apart from this reforms rigorous standstill dominates; foremost the (as is known) so spherical riffing chokes on its conservative closeness. Concrete: The repertoire of the guitars adapts the stylistics of all former releases in banal manner and tries to bring those into a new context by dint of finest variation – this is in no way successful, at least from an objective perspective. Besides, the especially aggravating fact must be mentioned that the compositional main part spans thirty-three minutes only and the remaining twenty are captured by the excessively overstretched monotony-colossus “Coma II”. On the contrary, subjectively viewed, “To Lay Like Old Ashes” will surely rejoice in a lot of positive reactions, for it operates in the haze of the most typical Austere-tradition and by virtue of its uncomplex because well-known character is acutely accessible. So, to those who consider a stout-hearted and qualitatively good, bottomlessly boldly stretched self-replica together with really worth-lauding, but de facto rarely seeded improvements to be enough essence - those will take their right choice in this connection. |
