Weekly Digest November 22-28 листопада

Today we have new releases by Hypocrisy and Cynic, the supergroup Lock Up with unstoppable grindcore, lots of black metal for every taste, modern British skinheads, and epic heavy metal in our Weekly Digest.

Archgoat — Worship The Eternal Darkness

What can I say, the cult Bestial Black Metal band from Finland did exactly what they are loved for. Vicious, evil, and relentless metal, for the glory of Satan, of course. This music is not for the faint of heart.

The Chisel — Retaliation

Modern British skinhead punk sounds like this. The band, which includes people who also contributed to Chubby & The Gang (who also released a great LP this year), Crown Court, Violent Reaction, Chain Of Flowers, released this beauty via the London label La Vida Es Un Mus, which (and I do not get tired of repeating it) is a hardcore / punk label with the best taste right here and right now.

Cynic — Ascension Codes

The band Cynic started out as a straightforward death metal and went a long way to become a progressive rock band. Working on the album was not easy, 2020 took the lives of 50% of the band, RIP Sean Malone and Sean Reinert. "Ascension Codes" is a 49-minute journey, consisting of 18 tracks, 9 songs, and 9 amplifier interludes, so I advise you to listen to it from start to finish to fully enjoy the atmosphere.

Hunters Moon — The Great Pandemonium

Straight up Bathory worship from Melbourne, Australia. Right on!

Hypocrisy — Worship

"With governments finally admitting that UFOs do in fact exist, and humanity attempting to heal from a state of the recent crisis, the timing couldn’t be more appropriate for the newest addition to the Hypocrisy catalog: Worship" — Nuclear Blast Records. 11 tracks of precise ferocious musicianship by Swedish melodic death metal band.

Lock Up — The Dregs Of Hades

The legendary grindcore supergroup (because any band Shane Embury plays in becomes a supergroup, and also here we have Thomas Linberg from At The Gates, doing the vocal duties! And in general Lock UP always had an intersting line-up, for instance, Peter from Hypocrisy sang on their first LP) publishes its fifth full-length album. I love how Linberg shouts hardcore vocals, a fun album.

Morgul Blade — Fell Sorcery Abounds

Fantasy-blackened-epic-heavy-metal band Morgul Blade, the residents of one of the main suppliers of new wave of traditional heavy metal bands – the Greek label No Remorse Records, continue to forge true metal. If you do not want to go on a campaign to fight for glory while listening to this record, something is wrong with you then.

Negura Bunget — Zău

Negura Bunget band has its origins in the dense forests of Romania, a fact that is already established in the band's name (which approximately translates to "Misty Woods"). This captivating, deep, and multi-layered final part of the Romanians’ "Transylvanian trilogy" was hanging by a thread. When the creative mastermind and driving force behind NEGURĂBUNGET, a drummer Gabriel "Negru" Mafa had a terminal heart-attack in March of 2017, his tragic passing seemed to dictate that his grand vision of a metal-anchored musical interpretation of Romania's beautiful landscapes, traditions, and myths as well as his homeland spirituality were doomed to remain unfinished as Beethoven's 10th symphony. Yet, the veteran musicians, that had been with Negru in the final incarnation of NEGURĂ BUNGET's ever-changing line-up, were not prepared to give up this vision and let it slip into unheard obscurity.

Sulfure — Exorde du vide

An EP from the French Canadians Sulfure is just 13 minutes long and almost 2 of them is intro. But when the intro is over — not a single second is wasted. This is a melodic atmospheric métal noir with not quite black metal vocals. The band promises to send the listener on a "bubonic journey into the world of mental scars and ascetic misanthropy", whatever that means it seems to work.
