Weekly Digest 19-25 March
The return of legendary punks Rudimentary Peni, post mortum Bodom After Midnight, Bongzilla in honor of 4/20, Dinosaur Jr., experimenters Big Brave, black metal from Paysage d’Hiver and Spectral Lore, also hardcore and death metal in our Weekly Digest!
Altarage - Succumb
The band from Bilbao that I was lucky enough to see live in pre-pandemic times in Barcelona as a warm-up for Imperial Triumphant. Altarage creates heavy music in which death metal takes a lead, but you can also hear some doom and black metal with an apocalyptic atmosphere there. The sound is sometimes confusing, but they do make you feel anxious and gloomy.

Big | Brave - Vital
“Minimalism and instinct, structure/freedom and meticulous timing form are the cornerstones of BIG | BRAVE’s precise, rhythmical sound” – written about these Montreal experimenters on the Southern Lord records. Fascinating female vocals, heavy sharp sound hits and mesmerizing rhythms. Interesting material.

Bodom After Midnight - Paint The Sky With Blood EP
RIP Alexi Laiho. The number of people who got into extreme metal thanks to this guitarist and his contribution to melodic death metal is difficult to overestimate.

Bongzilla – Weedsconsin
4/20 marked the return of Bongzilla – they are back after 16 years of silence. And while “Weedsconsin” might not be band's best album, it also seems that your bong is not the cleanest either, but it does its job properly, just like Bongzilla.

Capra – In Transmission
Female fronted metallic hardcore with strong DIY ethos. A core focus of the band is charitable performings, in particular – for causes surrounding drug abuse and domestic violence. For fans of: Every Time I Die, Converge, Otep, Harms Way.

Dinosaur Jr. – Sweep Into Space
Alternative rock, light, chill, that feels like spring. Not many bands that were big in the 90's and then came back in the middle of 00s can show as much consistency as you can hear on Dinosaur Jr.'s albums.

Paysage d'Hiver - Geister
The Swiss blacker Paysage d'Hiver already appeared in Weekly Digest last year, when he released two albums so warmly received by critics. Before that, Ukrainian black metal fans could hear about Paysage d'Hiver through a split-record with Drudkh. So you know, this project is worth your attention. This time the album is about dreams and ghosts. Be sure to check this one out!

Rudimentary Peni – Great War
For the first time in twenty-six years, the UK anarcho-punk mastodonts release their new full-length album, entitled “Great War”. This is the first time we hear from the band since their 2009 single, “Wilfred Owen the Chance”. As raw and powerful as always.

Spectral Lore – Ετερόφωτος
Fresh release after the success of “Wanderers: Astrology of the Nine” – a split album from 2020, created with Mare Cognitum, their usual cosmic travelling companion. Now Spectral Lore return with “Ετερόφωτος”, their brand new and highly anticipated full-length, destined to set the whole progressive/atmospheric black metal scene on fire. “Ετερόφωτος” is conceptually a sequel to 2012 album “Sentinel” that was a kind of cosmic enlightenment story, in which after some trials the protagonist is transported to the "City of the Gods", where the eternal values and greatest knowledge of the universe are being guarded. In “Ετερόφωτος”, however, the Sentinel sees an earth which is at the brink of war and destruction, and seeing that the Gods are indifferent, he decides to reject eternal enlightenment” – says Ayloss, the mastermind behind Spectral Lore.
S∴h∵i (Struggling Harsh Immortals) - 4 死 Death
Relapse Records, after the reissue of GISM, decided to dive even deeper into Japanese hardcore punk scene. Initially, the label released almost two hours of unpublished material by the legendary band ZOUO, and now presents a new project of its leader Cherry Nishida, called S∴h∵i (Struggling Harsh Immortals). Here we will find a mixture of hardcore punk, industrial and metal.
