Weekly Digest 10-16 May

A new album by Caliban, tribute to the great blues artists by The Black Keys, checking out the atmospheric rock of Slovenians ZORYA as well as death metal by Grave Miasma while waiting for the album of the year from Panopticon, noise rock with post punk by Throat, synths by Zombi, black metal by Balmog and split by SeeYouSpaceCowboy / If I Die First in our Weekly Digest!

The Black Keys - Delta Kream

Hey, are you lonely, boy? Blues rock due to The Black Keys puts out a collection of hill country blues covers. Announcing the album, Dan Auerbach said: "We made this record to honor the Mississippi hill country blues tradition that influenced us starting out. These songs are still as important to us today as they were the first day Pat and I started playing together and picked up our instruments."

Balmog – Eve

Balmog states: "This isn’t an avant-garde or experimental album, there is no intention to innovate, we just haven’t set limits and we have put into practice everything we have in our heads. In some ways we wanted to recreate the horror that rock music has built from Sisters of Mercy to Mayhem; from Pink Floyd or King Crimson to Danzig or Morbid Angel." Not bad at all album from the Spanish band.

Caliban - Zeitgeister

German metalcore outfit Caliban, who were quite frequent guests in Kyiv at the time, are returning with a new album. Like their compatriots, Heaven Shall Burn, Caliban didn’t go lighter as their career goes, and come closer and closer to be labeled a melodic death metal band. "Zeitgeister" is the first album on which Caliban may be heard only in their first language – German, and it also has an incredibly positive effect on the sound.

Grave Miasma - Abyss Of Wrathful Deities

UK death metal. Grave Miasma has been on the stage for 20 years and this is only their second full-length album. Six-minute tracks, juicy, tense, atmospheric and evil, still very old-school. But to say that the "Abyss Of Wrathful Deities" is a hit, well not at all. It seems like EP is the best format for old-school metal death releases right now, because of how often records are put out in the genre.

Panopticon - …And Again Into The Light

Normally on Weekly Digest I present only records that I was able to give a listen first. But sometimes Panopticon happens. "…And Again Into The Light" will be released tomorrow and to listen to this album will be the first thing that I am going to do. Panopticon is an atmospheric black metal project by Austin L. Lunn "A. Lundr", who lives in America, away from big cities and praises nature. "This record is dedicated to all those who refuse to give up and continue to fight for the light and beauty in this world," says A. Lundr. Everyone who is having a hard time, everyone who is tired – go to the forest or to the riverside, away from people and listen to the sounds of nature. And then to this album. Or vice versa. And exhale.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy / If I Die First - A Sure Disaster

What happens if you take the worst of metal, hardcore and punk? This record. Yikes!

Throat – Smile Less

While the foundation of Throat’s sound remains in 90s noise rock, "Smile Less" pushes its way through all boundaries, starting off with cold post-punk vibes and ending with a wall of harsh noise. Throat scratches the right itch!

Zombi – Liquid Crystal

Zombi return with their new EP. A 5 track EP, "Liquid Crystal" sees Steve Moore and A.E. Paterra continuing to explore the very melodic sensibilities, synthscapes, and driving rhythmic section that made me fall in love with their latest full-length "2020".

Z O R Y A - Primeval

Z O R Y A calls itself atmospheric post-black, but in my opinion, they sound more like atmospheric rock with the blackened harsh vocals. The music is beautiful, well done Slovenes!
